Here are three basic means to acquire a digital image:
- Direct: fastest method, requires a sensor that records the image–an electronic receptor that is specially coated. In a similar manner that you would place a film packet, the sensor is placed in the oral cavity.
- Indirect: slowest method, requires a conventional dental radiograph.
- Semi-indirect: requires a special sensor called a photostimuable phosphor plate (PSP) and a special scanner.

For those who are currently looking for dental insurance coverage, there are options open to you that you probably have never thought about. In order to find dental insurance that is affordable and offers you the coverage you and/or your family needs, sometimes you have to think outside the box. Below is a list of places to look for dental coverage that you may not have thought about.
1) State funded dental programs. While these programs used to be only available to the poor and unemployed, many states now offer plans that people in the middle class can qualify for. Not only are these plans very inexpensive, they usually offer a big list of participating dentists for you to see as well. Call your state health department for more information.
2) Private discount groups. As the need for affordable dental care grows, so do the amount of these private groups that are being formed to help their members get affordable dental work. You don’t have to pay expensive premiums, just a one time membership fee. For being a member, you have access to the group’s usually large list of dentists that offer discounted work. This option is best for individuals and for those looking to get cheap cosmetic dental work done.
3) Business groups. There are more and more business networking groups that are offering discounts on dental coverage to their members because they have worked out an agreement with the insurance company. This is a great option for those who are self employed because not only do you get access to cheap dental insurance when you do, you can gain business contacts and referrals at the same time.
Do you have health insurance? Hopefully, you do because of the strong importance of it. Without insurance coverage, medical needs will cost you dearly. When you think of health insurance, you probably think of doctor visits, surgical procedures, etc., but there is more to be covered.
One such thing is your teeth. You need your teeth to be healthy if you want to keep them for a long time. You should brush and floss everyday, but you should also have periodic visits at the dentist for a cleaning. Sometimes you really can’t avoid the dentist if you need work done such as filling a cavity or doing a root canal.
Dental work can also be expensive. If you pay for it all yourself out of pocket, it will add up fast and some people just can’t afford it. Often on health insurance plans, the dental insurance coverage is just not enough. This will require you to get some sort of supplemental dental insurance.
Check with your current health insurance provider to see what they offer as far as dental insurance. If you are covered by your employer’s benefit package and your dental coverage is lacking, you will need to find a company that offers supplemental coverage for what you need at an affordable price. Shop around for good coverage but make sure you are not spending so much that you might as well pay for the work out of pocket. In that case, it wouldn’t be worth it. This type of supplement is also very beneficial for those who are covering a family.
